Oromia Physicians Association 6th Annual Conference

Oromia Physicians Association successfully held its 6th Annual Conference themed “Connecting for Healing: Empowering Health Care Heroes through Strategic Partnership,” on June 9, 2024, at Elilly International Hotel, Finfinne.

The conference was graced by the inperson presence of distinguished guests from Oromia Health Bureau, Ministry of Health, OPA’s former and current Executive Committee and Board members, OPA’s Mobile Health Team members, Zonal Health Bureau Heads and delegates, officials and experts from higher institutions, and representatives from our valued stakeholders along with the esteemed members from across the region. We were also honored by the virtual presence of distinguished international guests, including International Oromo Health Professionals Association ’s President and members, Wabii Maccaa Association’s former President, respected members, and other dignitaries.

The event commenced with the beautiful ritual blessings by Elders, followed by inspiring speeches from OPA’s President (Dr. Belayneh Leta) and Board Chairman Prof. Senbeta Guteta, and our guest of honor of the day, Dr. Mengistu Bekele (Oromia Health Bureau Head).

We were moved by the keynote addresses from Dr. Ibrahim Amae, IOHPA’s president, and Dr. Esaias Giorgis, WMA’s former president , which set a tone of inspiration and commitment.

Awards were presented in various categories to individuals and organizations, both within the country and abroad, who have demonstrated exemplary dedication and professionalism. The annual report, including operational and financial summaries, alongside the annual plan, was meticulously presented. Attendees praised OPA’s miraculous and historical performance over the past two years, highlighting our life-saving humanitarian efforts in war, drought, and outbreak-affected areas in Western and Southern Oromia Constructive comments on the way forward have also been suggested by the participants, which were valuable inputs adding further success to the meeting.

The conference featured other insightful presentations on critical topics such as Esophageal Cancer by Dr. Biniam Tefera (AHMC), Global Health Education for Physicians by Dr. Hailu Dhufera (Research Associate and Instructor at Harvard T H Chan School of Public Health Boston, USA), and The Global Landscape of Humanitarian Aid and OPA’s National and Regional Health Cluster member by a WHO Ethiopia delegate. These presentations fostered promising discussions among members, stakeholders, and participants.
