Dr. Mulu Muleta-OPA’s 6th Annual Conference Award Winner for the expertise and extraordinary services in restoring hope & dignity

Dr. Mulu Muleta obtained Medical Degree in June 1984 and Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology in June 1990, from Gondar College of Medical Sciences and Addis Ababa University respectively; Master of Science in Disease Control, from Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium, 2000; Certificate in Leadership Training, University of San Francisco, 2003; PhD, from University of Bergen, Centre of International Health & Department of Clinical Medicine, January 2010.

Dr. Mulu Muleta, Obstetric fistula surgeon and local representative of Women and Health Alliance International (WAHA), in Ethiopia 2010 to 2018; teaching staff at University of Gondar, Ethiopia, as of 2010 to 2018; External advisor at National Unit for Gynaecological Fistulae, Haukeland University Hospital, Department Obstet/Gynecol, Bergen, Norway, as 2012 -2018.She is international trainer in fistula surgery and attended international outreach program for Bangladesh, Somaliland, Pakistan, Tanzania; Uganda and Kenya.

She worked as MSc training programme coordinator at United Nations Population Fund, Country Office, 2008-2009; Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, at African Union Medical Center, 2001-2008; Obstetric Fistula surgeon, trainer and medical director at Fistula Hospital Addis Ababa, 1990-2008;
Major honorary commitments include: President of International Society of Obstetric Fistula Surgeons as of 2012-2014; Treasurer, International Society of Obstetric Fistula Surgeons, 2008-2012; Co-Chair/member, Fistula working group, FIGO developing training manual in fistula management, 2008-2018; Member, International Fistula Working Group, UNFPA, Research and Indicators sub-group, since 2005; Editorial board member, Ethiopian Medical Journal, 2000 to 2021; Editorial board member, Ethiopian Reproductive Health Journal, since 2007-2022; Council member, Ethiopian Science and Technology Commission, 2003-2006 and Member, National Ethical Clearance Committee, 2003-2006.

She received award recognizing long term service at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, Addis Ababa, 2007; FIGO award in recognition of women obstetrician/gynaecologist, Cape Town, 2009; Athena international award, Chicago, USA, 2010, awarded with the Knight medal of the Order of the Le’gion d’Honneur (France’s highest distinction) in 2015; recognized as woman of excellence by AWIB Ethiopia in 2023.

Currently running her own MCH center (Ithiel MCH) at Akaki Kality subcity in Addis Ababa; where she treats women with Fistula and uterine prolapses for free (with the kind support of Netherlands based NGO named ISEE(Interkerkelijke Stiching Ethiopia/Eritrea)).
